Raw, windy, icy, and snowy times are here for homeowners in southeastern PA. At least for the foreseeable future, that is. Keeping your outdoor spaces free from the harsher aspects of this season takes some time and exertion. Modern Landscapes has compiled a thoughtful list of ideas to keep your outdoors safe for the coming spring. You will be back inside in no time poring over those seed catalogs!
Protect your furniture. Wicker will look pretty in May if it spends the winter in your garage or shed due to its fragility. Teak furniture has natural oils that help it weather the storm. Metal furniture does well, but will do better if covered. You can also add a layer of car wax on it to protect it through whatever the day or night brings. Fabric will need to be cleaned and dried and come inside. Any furniture that can be outside throughout the storms will still do better with a cover.
Make sure pots can weather any weather. Containers of most materials will be able to shelter in place outside. The caveat is for those composed of clay or ceramic, which can be prone to cracking in extreme weather. If you want to enjoy their beauty for years to come, then clean them and turn them upside down outside. Doing that will ensure no water lays in the bottom to later freeze and crack the planter.
All boots on deck! Decking will do best with some ongoing attention. As you come and go over the deck through this season, make sure that the area is clean and free of any ice or debris. A clear and warmer day is a good time to use the blower to remove any buildup of leaves or other substances that can harm your decking. Keeping it clear during ice and snow events is a safety must.
Inspect, clean, and repair hard surfaces. Pavers, brick, and even stone patios also need winterizing. Clean any fungus, mold, or other debris with a pressure washer. After that, inspect to be sure the surface is clear of any chips or cracks. If your inspection turns up any issues, take the time to fill the cracks, or replace as needed. Modern Landscapes is happy to help with any repair work needed during the season.
Feed the birds. The starkness of this beautiful time of year is never more apparent than seeing that cardinal pair outside your kitchen window. Encourage and supplement their berry foraging with some delicious sunflower seed. Sunflower seed is a favorite of the greatest range of birds. You can even craft some nifty suet feeders with the help of your little ones. Enjoy the variety of birds our corner of Pennsylvania has to share.
Taking time during this harsh weather season to ensure your outdoor living spaces are protected will be so worthwhile come the blossoming of crocus and hyacinths. Those first warm spring days you will be able to uncover and relax outdoors — still probably with a cup of hot tea! The professionals at Modern Landscapes are here if you have any questions or are in need of hardscaping or landscaping help.
